In the context of the exhibition YOU ARE HERE. Central Asia, artist and curator Timur Karpov presents and comments on excerpts from films made by independent filmmakers from Central Asia starting in the 1990s.
The program Video Art and Independent Cinema in Central Asia reflects on how the dissolution of the Soviet Union coincided with the rapid expansion of the video industry, providing artists with unprecedented access to new technologies. The analysis takes place within a socio-political context marked by authoritarian governance, state repression, and revolutionary movements, exploring the role of video art and independent cinema as aesthetic expressions and acts of resistance.
Timur Karpov for over 15 years, he has been active in Uzbekistan’s cultural and creative sector, holding positions of responsibility in film production, artistic management, and the non-profit sector. His work focuses on human rights advocacy, environmental justice, and sustainable development.
He is the co-founder and director of the 139 documentary center in Tashkent, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to research, documentation, and culture.
