“The voice always carries with it a wealth of connotations. From the most raucous noise to the most exquisite song, the voice always signifies something, points to something beyond itself, and evokes a vast array of associations.”

This is how Luciano Berio’s author’s note to Sequenza III (1965) begins—a composition for solo voice in which “the emphasis is placed on the sonic symbolism of vocal and, at times, visual gestures, on the shadows of meaning that accompany them, and on the associations and conflicts they suggest.”

Building on these ideas, the performer presents a radically slowed-down rendition of the score, doubling its duration to disarticulate the original temporality and open up a suspended perceptual space. Through the interweaving of improvisation, an active relationship with space, and an attentiveness to the agency of sound—resonances, echoes, propagations—a sonic dramaturgy takes shape that does not seek to “interpret” the score, but rather to bring out its fractures, tensions, and voids. The voice thus presents itself as an acoustic body that interrogates and amplifies the processes of collective listening.

The performance is part of: Voices – A Più Voci, a program of three performances curated by Threes Productions on the occasion of the exhibition Dove non sono mai stato, là sono, promoted by Fondazione Elpis and dedicated to the Una Boccata d’Arte project. The program brings together a selection of artists who have participated in previous editions of Una Boccata d’Arte and who will present performative interventions in dialogue with the exhibition itinerary and the spaces of the Foundation, activating a dynamic relationship between body, sound, and architecture.
