Video Art and Independent Cinema in Central Asia
Lavanderia
Via Lamarmora 26, Milan
As part of the exhibition YOU ARE HERE. Central Asia, artist and curator Timur Karpov presents and discusses excerpts from films made by independent Central Asian filmmakers beginning in the 1990s.
The program Video Art and Independent Cinema in Central Asia examines how the dissolution of the Soviet Union coincided with the rapid expansion of the video industry, granting artists unprecedented access to new technologies. This analysis takes place within a socio-political context marked by authoritarian governance, state repression, and revolutionary movements, exploring the role of video art and independent cinema as aesthetic expressions and acts of resistance.
Timur Karpov has been active in Uzbekistan’s cultural and creative sector for over 15 years, holding leadership roles in film production, arts management, and the nonprofit sector. His work focuses on human rights advocacy, environmental justice, and sustainable development.
He is the co-founder and director of the 139 Documentary Center in Tashkent, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to research, documentation, and culture.
